St. John's Wort Soap Bar

Walk into an old house anywhere in rural Turkey and there's a fair chance of a jar on the windowsill: yellow Hypericum flowers submerged in olive oil, left in the sun until the oil turns a deep, improbable red. It's called kantaron yağı, it has been made the same way for centuries, and it is what this bar is built on.

The colour is the interesting part. The flowers are yellow; the red develops as hypericin and related compounds release into the oil over weeks of slow solar infusion. Nothing is added and nothing is extracted with solvents — just flowers, oil and time. That infused oil goes into the soap pot cold, so the bar comes out a warm amber-rose with a quiet, resinous, faintly medicinal smell unlike anything else on a bathroom shelf.

St. John's wort (Hypericum) infused oil, olive oil, coconut oil, vegetable glycerin, sodium hydroxide, water.

How it's made

Cold-processed by hand in Turkey and cured on wooden racks for several weeks. No heat is applied at any stage, which is what keeps the vitamins, antioxidants and aromatic compounds in the oils intact instead of cooking them away. Each bar is cut by hand from a poured block, so slight differences in size, shade and marbling are normal — that is the method showing, not a fault.

Making it last
