That is visible when you hold one: the outline is softly irregular, one side never quite mirrors the other, and the glaze sits unevenly, pooling darker in the hollows and thinning over the curves.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe clay underneath is red earthenware, dug and worked the way it has been for a very long time in this part of the world. The glaze is applied over it and fired, which is why the surface has depth to it — speckles, small pinholes, tonal drift across a single piece. On a factory dish these would be faults. Here they are the record of a hand.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cstrong\u003eTWO GLAZES TO CHOOSE FROM\u003c\/strong\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eGreen-Mustard is the deeper of the two: a mottled, olive-toned glaze that gathers darker in the hollows and catches the light along the back and breast. Cream is the quieter one — a pale, warm beige, softer in tone and almost matt where the glaze runs thin.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe form is identical in both. Same duck, same dimensions, same cream-glazed bowl inside; only the outside colour changes. The beak is cream glazed on both, and each eye is a single small black dot.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eOne thing to expect within either colour: because the glaze is applied by hand and fired in small batches, no two pieces come out exactly alike. Your Green-Mustard may run a little more olive or a little more amber than the one photographed; your Cream may sit slightly warmer or paler. The colour you choose is the colour you get — the shade within it is the part that varies.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cstrong\u003eHOW TO USE IT\u003c\/strong\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe bowl holds a full-size bar comfortably; a 200 g Aleppo bar sits in it with room to spare, and a smaller cold-process bar looks at home in it too.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eOne thing to know: there is no drainage hole. The bowl is closed, which means it will collect the water that runs off a wet bar. Pour that water out every day or two and let the dish dry, and the soap will last as it should. Leave a bar sitting in standing water and it will soften and go to waste — that is true of any dish without drainage, and it is worth knowing before you buy rather than after.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eWipe clean with a cloth and warm water. Do not put it in the dishwasher.
