Decoding the commercial soap label
Sodium lauryl sulfate (SLS) is a surfactant derived from petroleum or coconut oil. It is efficient at removing oil and creating foam. It is also efficient at disrupting the skin’s acid mantle — the thin, slightly acidic film that protects skin from bacteria, retains moisture, and maintains the microbiome. Studies on SLS exposure consistently show barrier disruption, increased trans-epidermal water loss, and elevated irritation scores even at the concentrations used in consumer products.
Synthetic fragrance — listed as ‘parfum’ or ‘fragrance’ — is the leading cause of contact allergic reactions in personal care products. The word represents a single opaque label entry that can contain hundreds of individual chemical compounds, none of which are individually disclosed.
Parabens (methylparaben, propylparaben, butylparaben) are preservatives that extend shelf life. They have been the subject of persistent concern regarding hormonal disruption — they are detectable in breast tissue and urine, and in vitro studies have shown weak estrogenic activity.
BHT (butylated hydroxytoluene) is an antioxidant preservative also used in food. It is irritating to skin at higher concentrations and is classified as an endocrine disruptor at higher exposures. Its presence in bar soap is to extend shelf life, not to benefit the user.

What Aleppo soap delivers instead
Sodium Olivate is saponified olive oil. It is a mild surfactant, a moisturiser through its retained glycerin fraction, and a source of oleic acid for skin barrier support.
Sodium Laurus Nobilate is saponified laurel berry oil. The antibacterial lauric acid, antifungal linalool and 1,8-cineole, anti-inflammatory sesquiterpenes — all present in the original oil, carried through saponification, active in the bar.
Aqua is water used in the saponification process. Almost entirely evaporated during curing.
Three ingredients. No preservation chemistry needed because there is no water in the finished bar to harbour bacteria. No fragrance chemistry needed because the bar is not fragrance-free by omission — it is fragrance-free by design.
The hidden cost of commercial soap
Commercial bar soaps are cheap partly because they strip skin so effectively that consumers then purchase moisturisers to counteract the stripping. The soap-and-moisturiser bundle is a natural commercial pairing — one product creating the problem, the second solving it. The consumer pays twice.
